Nat Geo’s Giant Traveling Map of South America at EKU and Model Lab School
National Geographic's Giant Traveling Map of South America will be housed in EKU's Model Laboratory Gym from Monday, April 20 – Friday, May 2, 2015. Dr. Sonja Yow and EKU's Department of Geosciences have organized and sponsored a giant traveling map for the past three years as part of their commitment to geography education and outreach.
“National Geographic Giant Traveling Maps are an excellent tool for promoting and supporting geography education,” said Yow. “It is a pleasure to bring these maps to the Eastern Community so that students and educators alike can experience hands- and feet-on’ geography and the enormously entertaining and educational opportunities afforded by these maps.”
Designed to promote geographic literacy by igniting interest in geography, the maps and accompanying activities incorporate physical movement and games to teach students place names, physical geography, cultural geography, and basic map-reading skills. Additionally, these large maps enhance the preparation of K-12 educators with respect to their geographic content knowledge and instructional strategies. Through this experience, everyone can better understand the power of maps and geography.
